The Borobudur Temple is a Buddhist monument complex from the eight century, and also the precursor of Angkorwat in Cambodia by at least two centuries. The temple is erected between 750 AD, constructed from dark-grey volcanic stone, shaping the truncated pyramid. The magnificent architecture also represented the highest expression of the artistic triumph at the time. This has made Borobudur as one of UNESCO World Heritage.
Rising 150 feet crowing a great hill that commands the entire country side, Borobudur has thousands of impressive stupas. Its walls are also galleries of bas-reliefs illustrating the life of Buddha. Its terraces comprising of five receding levels, decorated with a series of 435 Buddha’s statues. A circular platform on the fifth level itself recedes in three levels, around the edges of which stand 71 bell-shaped structures. This platform forms the immediate approach to the great stupa, which dominate the edifice. The Borobudur Temple may be seen as a great mandala or a magic cosmogram.
To visit Borobudur, tourist usually made Yogyakarta as a transit. Sometimes, Borobudur which is only about an hour away, are included in Yogyakarta’s travel packages.
