(Indonesian: Nasi Goreng)

This is one of the country everyday favorites. Serve in breakfast or dinner. There`s a lot of variation in recipe. This one, is the street food.

Indonesian Fried Rice

Serves: 4-6

Ingredients
  • 4 tablespoons cooking oil (can be replaced with corn oil and/or olive oil)
  • 1 tablespoons garlic, minced
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 large red chili pepper, chopped
  • 2 tablespoon Indonesian traditional soy sauce – salty or sweet “kecap(can be replaced with regular soy sauce)
  • 1 cup head cabbage, shredded
  • 1/2 pound fresh green beans, cut crosswise in small pieces
  • 21/2, cups steamed rice, cold
  • 1/2 pound shrimp, deveined and cut into small pieces (can be replaced with chicken, meat or meatball)
  • Direction

    Use a wok or frying pan to sauté’ garlic in oil over medium heat for 1-2 minutes. Add chili pepper, continue to sauté’ about 1 minute. Add shrimp, continue to sauté’ about 2 minute. Add cabbage and green beans, continue to sauté’ about approximately 5 minutes or until beans tender.
    Reduce heat to low. Pour rice into wok, mix with tomato, tomato sauce and soy sauce. Blend well and keep frying until hot.

    Serving Suggestion

    Serve each portion with a fried egg or ham on top.
